3D fabrics with technical functionalities and capability for adhesion to loop and hook systems
In a constantly evolving industrial market, the properties and three-dimensional structure of 3D fabrics (spacer) have opened the door to novel applications and uses across a multitude of sectors. Due to the rise of this technology, direct interaction with loop and hook fastening elements is increasingly required to facilitate closure in various end products. However, current fastening systems require manufacturing techniques of higher complexity and greater resource consumption, such as laminating processes or subsequent tailoring.
To date, the common approach to addressing this technical requirement has been the lamination of a velour-type brushed fabric onto a 3D tridimensional structure. Although this alternative partially solves the functional need, it presents significant technical and environmental drawbacks. On one hand, lamination represents an additional industrial process that significantly increases the cost of the final product, consumes energy resources, and generates a hybrid material whose subsequent separation is unfeasible. On the other hand, the addition of adhesives introduces external chemical compounds that prevent recycling and hinder the circular economy of the product. Furthermore, the addition of these superimposed layers negatively affects the original comfort properties, reducing essential aspects such as breathability, flexibility, and lightness of the fabric.
Faced with this challenge, and given the absence of an integrated double-functionality solution at both national and international levels, GEISA FABRICS, S.L. has launched an ambitious research and development project. The main objective of the initiative is the development of a spacer fabric (warp-knitted 3D fabric) that natively integrates a velour-type face (brushed fabric) into its structure. In this way, the fabric is endowed with direct adhesion capability to loop and hook systems, while retaining its condition as a lightweight, bulky material with a soft and velvety feel.
With this development, GEISA seeks to respond to a clear market demand by obtaining a superior performance product that directly simplifies the industrial process, reduces the quantity and diversity of materials used, and facilitates its integration into highly varied sectors. The company thus reaffirms its strong commitment to R&D as a true engine of competitiveness and growth, consolidating its brand image and exploring new technical capabilities in the field of advanced textiles.
This initiative takes place over the period between 01-01-2025 and 30-06-2026, with an overall investment of 495,974 euros and a granted aid of 371,980.5 euros, as part of a project co-financed by the European Union and CDTI.
